Humility certainly needs to factor into this section of the website. A quote from Marcel Duchamp comes to mind: "The artist performs only one part of the creative process. The onlooker completes it, and it is the onlooker who has the last word." With that in mind, this a bird's eye view of the last decade as a participant in national juried art festivals. I have received ten best in show awards, six best in painting, seven awards of excellence and six merit awards. I also won $45.00 on a penny slot machine in Atlantic City waiting for a rain storm to stop so an outdoor event could continue. There are two more decades of other tales. It has been a great run.
This has been a guiding quote of Martha Graham which seems to fit in this category for me: " There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action. And because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, nor how valuable, nor how it compares with other's expressions. It is your business to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware to the urges that activate you. Keep the channel open." Enough said with the hope that yet another decade will follow.
